Magicians have helped shape the Vegas entertainment landscape. Among it’s many different nicknames, Vegas has often been called the Magic Capital of the World for its large concentration of magicians that call Vegas home. Many magicians dream of one day headlining the Las Vegas Strip and playing in some of the biggest and best casinos in the world. One can not think of magic in Las Vegas without thinking of arguably the best magician living today. David Copperfield transformed the way that magic was seen not only in a theater, but on television as well.
Growing up in a small New Jersey town, David Copperfield lived in an apartment complex where there weren’t any other kids his own age, he had to come up with imaginative ideas to keep himself busy. One summer before he was to go off to camp, he took up an interest in ventriloquism. After a trip with his family to a New York City magic shop, his interest in magic began. He quickly learned as much as he could and eventually started doing shows around his hometown. He stuck with magic all throughout high school and part of college before being asked to star in a television special at age 19.
The Magic of ABC Starring David Copperfield was a smash hit. David was able to showcase his skills in front of a nationally televised audience. This was the first of a massively sucsessful run of yearly television specials. As his popularity soared, he was able to expose the world to new and exciting illusions, most of which no one in or out of the magic world had ever seen. He reached worldwide recognition when he became the first and only illusionist to vanish The Statue of Liberty. He turned heads several years later when he walked through The Great Wall of China. Even with these big mega illusions he still found time to tour the world bringing his unique story-based illusions to millions of people. He broke box office records wherever he went and even had a run on Broadway where he sold more tickets than the biggest Braodway musical of all time, Cats.
David Copperfield presents magic in a grand and mezmerising way that makes you feel as if you are part of the act. He pulls you in with a fantastic story, sometimes without saying so much as one word, and shows you that no matter what, anything is possible.
For the last several years he has called Las Vegas home. He performs over 500 shows per year and is constantly introducing new material into his stage show. He was not dubbed The King of Magic for no reason. Copperfield opened up the door to many of today’s most well known magicians. Many of the Strip’s performers cite him as an influence and it shows in their acts.
